Necropanther love their EPs, and so I always make room for them as I have a real liking for this band. This band is always charting their own course, with their often strange sci-fi lyrical themes and their individual sound which initially seems like it is Melodeath but has so many other influences on it that it does not easily categorize. I always know I am going to hear something interesting. This does not diverge that widely from their old stuff, though there are some startling sax solos in the mix that actually work in the context of the songs. Almost half the running time is taken up by the 11-minute epic "The Transported Man," which does not sound like anything they have ever done before, working a slower groove and with long, entirely instrumental passages—it is ambitious and works in a lot of intricate playing. I don't know if it totally holds together as a composition, but I don't get bored listening to it, and it feels shorter than it is because I'm interested. This is another evolution of Necropanther. The playing is excellent, the riffs are sometimes gold, and vocalist Paul Anop is still pretty uninspired. If you like this band then you want to hear "The Transported Man," as it is their most ambitious song to date, but the whole thing is solid. |
