This black metal band out of Quebec City reminds me a lot of French (from France, that is) black metal around the turn of the century. It's very melodic, yet also very aggressive and with harsh vocals that vary from aggressive to tortured or anguished and kind of steal the show here. The guitar work reminds me a lot of France's Hegemon. The melodies have a melancholic vibe to them, sometimes flirting with doomy without quite getting there. Mid to fast paced for the most part, this has a vibe that really sounds like black metal from the later part of the '90s. Take away the melodies and the music is actually pretty raw and basic black metal that pretty much kicks ass, simply put. Les ombres malades ("the sick shadows") is an album displaced in time, but brings us back to a time when some of the best black metal was released. |
