It shouldn't take any great leap from seeing this band's name to concluding they play some kind of heavy/doom/stoner/occult hard rock/heavy metal and that is the case on their fourth album, The Exit Garden. Sabbath's fingerprints are going to be found at the scene of almost all doom metal, but The Wizards are more in line with Vestal Claret's stripped-down sound with relatively unfiltered vocals. "Dawn of Another Life" exemplifies this approach most directly with other tracks evoking bands like Wytch Hazel (several tracks, though heavier), Ghost ("Oniros" in the vocal lines and guitars) and even a riff not too far removed from "La Villa Stangiato" from Rush that is plopped in the middle of "Holy Mountain Mind." I can't say The Exit Garden is a get up and air guitar kind of doom record, nor is it crushingly heavy or drenched with reverb. It has a more laid-back vibe and while the songwriting isn't overly memorable, the album is a good listen throughout. |
