Highways is the songwriting project of a guy by the name of Joe Coleman, and he has an international group of musicians that help him bring his music to life. Taking advantage of not needing to all be together has allowed Coleman's Highways to be quite productive with Never Die their third full-length album in four years. The previous two were muscular, hard rocking heavy metal with '80s influences and a modern production. On Never Die, Ukrainian singer Olha Lishchyshyn has taken over lead vocal duties (previously handled by guitarist Carlos Molina), giving Highways' sound a new dimension. She can belt it out, like Tower's Sarabeth Linden or Leather Leone from Chastain, but has good range as well, making her a good addition to the lineup. The songwriting continues to be solid, and Coleman takes advantage of Lishchyshyn's emotional and evocative vocals on cuts like "Lost Oasis" and "Paint it Red," something he wasn't really able to do on the previous albums. There's nothing revolutionary on Never Die, but if you like simple, direct heavy metal, especially with a female singer, it is more than worth a listen. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
