Whoever is a talent scout at Dying Victims Productions deserves a medal because just about everything they release is at least good, but mostly very good when not downright excellent. Mean Mistreater is another top-notch entry on their roster. A very young band, formed just last year in Austin, Texas, Mean Mistreater jump on a now-familiar and enduring trend (not a complaint) of playing '80-style heavy metal. Lots of bands do it, and this bunch here does it better than many. Speedy, melodic, catchy, Razor Wire is a dream come true if you are into the more upbeat style of metal—you won't find any song to bring down your spirits here, quite the opposite. The drums and like thunder, the guitar riffs are catchy and razor-sharp, and the solos sound like they were teleported from the '80s. The female vocals are a major highlight here, the singer having a gritty and powerful voice that delivers infectious, often screamed vocal lines that will make anyone stop and pay attention. Razor Wire is short, but there isn't a second of filler. Great stuff.
