Well, this is a surprise. Blood Feast were kind of a black sheep Thrash band back in the heyday, being a kind of cult band among fans with their uncompromising sound and whacked-out vocal approach on albums like Chopping Block Blues, but it's been a really long time since that era, and the band was silent for a long time until 2017's The Future State of Wicked, which I confess I missed entirely. This is really like a whole new band with only guitarist Adam Tranquilli carrying through from the original incarnation of the band, even taking over the vocal duties on this album. Refreshing to hear Thrash as pure as this, without any influences from anything else—just raw, straight Thrash from the shoulder, no bullshit. This really sounds like an album recorded in 1988, just with better production. Tranquilli's vocals are also pure Thrash, sounding like Baloff or Don Doty back when Thrash was Thrash. He does come off as a little monotone, and could stand to add some variety, but he sounds better than I expected. If you like retro Thrash this is gold, if you are marginal, then you may find this a bit stodgy and old-fashioned. See below for more interviews... ↓ |
