I dug the hell out of Aevum Agere's previous album, Emperor of Hell - Canto XXXIV, so I was looking forward to this release. I was damn right to do so, as it turns out, because Darkness, Then Light is every bit as good, serving as a perfect end to their trilogy based on Dante's Inferno. Once again, sole remaining member and mastermind Bruno Masulli is the star of the show with his guitar work and Rob Lowe-esque vocals, with new members Marcello D'Anna and Michele Coppola backing him up with a solid rhythm section. Much like last time, Bruno shows a love of the old greats like Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, and Memento Mori as he wrings out a tour de force of pounding old-school doom, though this time there's clear accents of traditional metal and even thrash in some of the guitar work. I'd go on, but really, most of what I said in the review for their last album applies here too, and I'm more than happy to repeat myself just enough to let you know that In Aevum Agere are currently shaping up to be Italy's best ongoing doom metal merchants. Get it, and get it now.
