This band keeps putting out albums, and I keep hunting them down. I don't own the CD of their debut Saga of the Draugr anymore, and now I wish I kept it. Anyway, this is their fourth album, and it is clearly their best. Heulend Horn were always aiming for an epic Viking kind of sound, and they have finally arrived at one that works for them—kind of a mix of early Forefather and mid-period Graveland with the hammering drums, marching guitars, and keys and choral vocals layered on top. The harsh vocals are mixed extremely low, so they mostly appear as a kind of dimly-heard bellow under all the other sounds. Considering how amateurish this band started out, it is impressive how far they have come. |
