Man, it's been a long time since the simple pleasures of Dragonslayer. Twenty-three years later and here is the 7th album from this band who started as a one-off project and quickly took off. With Gus G long gone, this is a band built around guitarist/songwriter Fredrik Nordstrom and vocalist Niklas Isfeldt, who have both been around for the long haul from 2002.

Originally Dream Evil had some identity from the kick of hard rock guitar flash Gus G built into their sound, plus they just had really good hooks and riffs—the fact that the melodic metal landscape was so much thinner in 2002 certainly didn't hurt either. I suppose it's not surprising that this album sounds like a mishmash of ideas from the past two decades of heavy/power metal. The guitars are weak this time out, without the big, bold sound of the old days. In fact, the whole production sounds extremely half-assed, without the depth and power this band used to have. Combined with the lackluster songwriting, this is an album that just can't make much of an impression.
