I expect extreme metal from South America, especially Brazil where Litosth hails from, to be rough, bruising music boiling over with animus. On their third album, Cesariana, we get plenty of bashing drums and harsh rasping vocals but also a lot of melody and sprawling atmosphere with everything working quite well together. "In Waves" opens the album and sets the tone, alternately roaring headlong into battle and standing aloof, casting a majestic gaze over the landscape. There are similarly engaging moments in "The Clay Messiah" and "The Argonaut" and the songwriting throughout Cesariana is strong. The vocals are understandable, and the melodies are inviting even as Litosth seek to evoke a visceral response with the more direct elements of their music. Devotees of the harshest black/death metal might not be Litosth's target audience, but a broad swath of black, death, and epic metal fans who enjoy bands like Vinterland, Dissection, Thulcandra, and others in that vein should be on the hunt for Cesariana. |
