I hadn't realized it's already been three years since Artach released their second full-length album. This is an EP deserving of the name, at just under 13 minutes, and what hit me right away is that the band has taken a different direction this time around. From their melodic black metal of yore, here they're headed into a more punk and slightly industrial sound while still having that black metal aura glueing everything together. There are some passages that give out a black 'n' roll vibe as well. One of my first thoughts was that this is not unlike what Darkthrone did when they steered away from their trademark black metal and starting screwing with our heads by changing their sound quite a bit. The vocals are still kind of an acquired taste and a little distracting at times, taking too much attention away from the music. Your mileage may vary. Sgrios is an interesting shift in direction that makes me curious to hear what Artach have in store with the next album.
