New metal bands continue to pop up with staggering frequency, which brings me to Brazil's Auro Control and their debut album, The Harp. Brazil might be better known for its extreme metal, but they also have a power metal tradition headlined by Angra and that is the direction you need to look to find Auro Control. The album starts like any classic, early 2000s power metal album with an intro followed by the band hitting the gas as they race through "Feel the Fire" and into the rest of the album. There are more than a few progressive elements in Auro Control's songs, notably some acrobatic bass lines and even some Middle Eastern melodies subtlety woven in here and there. Songs like "Breaking Silence" lean in the direction of Symphony X, but most of The Harp is well-executed and "happy" power metal. The singer has a clear voice and more than a little charisma to help sell the choruses and the rest of the musicians are more than capable, so the whole album sounds great. Power metal fans have surely heard similar releases as Auro Control doesn't seek to stretch too many boundaries on The Harp, but it is a very enjoyable album with very few low spots to spoil the experience. |
