I had never heard of this Spanish band before their sixth album, Back to Nowhere, showed up in my review queue, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was some punishing power/thrash with a modern sound but roots reaching back to the '80s. I'm not a huge fan of the singer's voice, as he sounds like he's overdoing it, but it also kind of works, so it could just be a preference thing. Most of the album is non-stop bludgeoning guitars and pounding drums not unlike Armored Saint, but a few times In Vain ramps up the velocity, like on "The Last Breath of Freedom," and evokes bands like Primal Fear. Back to Nowhere was a grower, not really doing much for me initially but opened up the more I listened. I can envision some aspects of their sound that might not appeal to everyone, but if you like power/thrash you owe yourself a listen as In Vain could be right up your alley. |
