I was a big fan of the last album this project put out, so I practically leapt at the chance to listen to the promo for their (as of writing) upcoming EP, which is apparently the first in a two-part concept regarding the travels of a mentally ill guy unsuccessfully coping with it all. I'll admit, I was hoping Tommy would lean more into the darker, more experimental aspects of his sound here, but this is more a continuation of the bouncier, sillier side of things. That's not an issue by itself since even the goofier parts of Doomsday Deferred were good, and opener "Me n My Meds" has a solid groove and even a menacing undercurrent thanks to the band's unique approach to multi-tracking bass lines in lieu of guitars. It's just that afterwards, "Kept Pain Busy" comes in with its too bouncy bass lines and meandering, aimless structure, and I sort of tune out a good two minutes before it ends. While that issue is the worst there, the remaining two songs share this problem as well, with the instrumental "Zoomagazoo" at least having more momentum than the dull, misguided closer "Melvin Laid an Egg". I don't know, maybe I'm asking too much from a tongue in cheek, mildly morbid EP, and fans of less serious stoner material may like this more than me, but I know that Tommy can do much better than this, and that leaves me let down and mildly annoyed with this particular release. Maybe part two will be better, or will at least get this direction out of his system.
