Glimpse of the Dawn is the second album from Tasmania's Tarot, not the legendary Finnish band, which is part of the reason I'm writing this review, as a sort of public service announcement. This band plays a laid-back hard rock/heavy metal style of music that borrows heavily from '70s heavy rock like Deep Purple and early Rainbow along with NWOBHM pioneers Demon and Pagan Altar. Glimpse of the Dawn is full of occult vibes and mystical lyrics, slow, almost doomy riffing, and some beautiful melodies played on acoustic guitars. Obviously, it isn't the heaviest album out there, perhaps better suited to a late evening with the black lights on vs. blasting from the speakers as you race down the highway. Every time I listen, I hear Pagan Altar without the same level of character or catchiness, so a comparison to Wytch Hazel along with the other bands I mentioned might get you in the right frame of mind. I like Glimpse of the Dawn, but I cut my teeth on '70s hard rock and realize that music isn't for everyone nor is it an amazing example of the style, but I've certainly heard worse. Again, this is not Marco Hietala's Tarot and is for fans that like a healthy dose of hard rock in their metal mix. |
