Yaatana are a new act from Portugal, and that's about the only thing about them that's new. If the cover doesn't give it away, these boys are all about old-school thrash with more than a little crossover thrown in, and the fact they name the likes of S.O.D., Nuclear Assault, Kreator, and Anthrax as influences would have been obvious even if they didn't spell it out in the promo material. None of that is meant to be criticism, mind you, for I'm always for a band with no greater ambition than to give your neck muscles a serious workout while they party like they're on a beer-soaked dive bar stage from the '80s, and João Ferreira's rough, hardcore-influenced vocals go a long way in selling that vibe. Simple and safe as far as thrash goes, with enough anger and attitude to get by. |
