Powerful, epic, dark black metal is what France's Diablation offer on Irrévérence. The music is grandiose, pretty much taking over the room with its over-the-top atmosphere and strong symphonic leanings, and the agonizing, harsh vocals add a whole other dimension and really stand apart here. Throw in some sombre spoken passages for a pinch of apocalyptic creepiness. As is rather customary with French black metal, there's a lot of dark, catchy melodies that beautify things a little bit without taking away from the aural onslaught. Think of a mix of circa 2000 French black metal and that of the resuscitation of that scene a few years ago after a slump of 10+ years. Epic black metal like only the French—and a few imitators—know how to do. |
