Kaosmogonia is the tongue-twisting title of Hypersonic's third full-length album, their first in eight years. Symphonic metal is Hypersonic's genre of choice and while there is plenty of neo-classical elements, these Italians don't simply spread flowery keyboards and fiery guitar arpeggios all over the place. They've added things like Middle Eastern melodies and gothic metal flourishes such as harsh male vocals to offset the lovely female singing and a few down-tuned riffs here and there. Kaosmogonia is more in line with recent efforts from Delain, Epica, Seven Spires, etc. than traditionally Italian efforts from the likes of Rhapsody or Ancient Bards. It's well played with a good production, but not so overly slick that it slides into pop territory (the blasting drums at the beginning of "You Bastard" should disabuse you of that concern). Hypersonic color within the gothic/symphonic metal lines faithfully, so Kaosmogonia will be familiar to fans of that genre but should also offer them an entertaining listen.
