This is a Portuguese band with their debut album of crunching, evil Death Metal. "Vulcanology" is not usually what one thinks of for thematic content for this kind of music, but the imagining of volcanoes as sources of destruction and horror is not a stretch and is certainly rich with imagery of fire and death. Phenocryst are not really doing anything out of the ordinary musically, and this reminds me a bit of Sulphur Aeon or The Chasm with their atonal melodies and atypical song structures, but at heart this is a band that still wants to kick ass before anything else, and they do. |
