It's been years since I listened to any Barathrum, so I was surprised when I saw this new album land in my inbox. No need to go into the history of these long-running Finnish black metal stalwarts. Überkill is overall very aggressive and raw black metal with vocals that come off sounding a little caricatural, but in a good way, and they certainly stick out throughout the album. There's nothing here you haven't heard before if your black metal collection is well garnished; the vocals are hateful and angsty as fuck, the music is raw and brutal yet melodic—it's not polished but not messy either, a good compromise for the "two camps" when it comes to black metal as I think pretty much any fan of the genre should find something to like here. A lot of the songs are actually quite catchy, definitely more than I expected from the band. We're not quite talking about black 'n' roll, but there are some leanings. All in all, a dark and aggressive, yet fun album. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
