The music on Savage Wizdom's third album, Who's Laughing Now, is crunchy, melodic heavy metal that sits somewhere between in-your-face US metal and the epic European variety. Pounding drums, plenty of speed, roller coaster riffs, and sharp leadwork are all here, coming together beautifully on cuts like "Dark Horizon," which reminds me of bands like Riot. Unfortunately, singer Steve Montoya, Sr. (his son Steve Montoya, Jr. is one of the guitarists), who possesses a good set of pipes, has a tendency to be all over the place. Most of the time, it comes across like someone trying to emulate King Diamond's vocal acrobatics, and not really pulling it off but not impacting the songs much. Occasionally, however, it's a challenge to sit through, culminating on the song "Dances" when Montoya, Sr. sounds like he's sliding around trying to find the right note but frequently landing flat. I hate to knock someone who obviously has talent, but it is hard to ignore. Maybe just skip ahead to "Revenge for a King" where he sounds more comfortable, and the band is once again firing on all cylinders. Who's Laughing Now has its flaws but also some solid heavy metal. |
