I heard this one was lackluster, but that makes this more interesting because I always thought Wintersun were lackluster. I remember when their debut came out 20 years ago and it just seemed like an imitation of Ensiferum, and Ensiferum were already on thin ice with me. So here we are with their 4th album in two decades, and I was curious to see how it was.

In general, when this album slows down and does the symphonic instrumental thing, I like it better. When Wintersun speed up, they sound like a hundred other bands like this from 20 years ago, only with admittedly better musicianship. The songwriting is doing a lot and yet just blurs through you and you won't remember any of it. Jari Mäenpää is a hell of a musician, but his yapping vocals are terrible and he has no sense of meter or intensity, just cramming his dull vocals in all over the place. I would actually rate this higher if it was strictly instrumental, or just stuck to the choral backing vocal style. In the end you get a disc with a whole lot of music, but not any real songs and nothing that will stick with you.
