Third album for this highly underground German band who absolutely deserve more attention. This is ambitious Black Metal in the more melodic, epic school, recalling Uada with the melodic interludes and the highly involved compositions with the same melodies mutating through acoustic into tremolo slashing and then back again. The recording is sharp and has a lot of depth, eschewing the "basement" aesthetic of more kvlt bands. I get little hints of the atonal melodies of Dissection, the mood and atmosphere of Mgla, maybe even some Inquisition peeking through here and there. High praise, and this is maybe not as good as the comparisons make it sound, but Servant are definitely pushing boundaries here, trying to make something that is Black Metal but does not sound like 800 other bands. A really strong album that never gets boring. |
