If there is one band that jumps to mind the moment "Arrival of the Avenger," the opening track of Triumpher's second album Spirit Invictus begins, it is undoubtedly Manowar. The song is almost an homage to "Black Wind, Fire and Steel," from the Eric Adams vocals to the rolling double kick drums to the pulsating bass. There are more Manowar flourishes throughout the album which is overall a throw your fist in the air flurry of riffs, leads, and high-pitched screams. As Sargon noted in his review of Storming the Walls, the songwriting on Spirit Invictus doesn't keep pace with the band's energy, especially after the first couple of songs, when Triumpher start to lose steam. Whether the vocal lines end up as afterthoughts leading a wail or riffs get repeated a little too often, the second half of the album can be a chore at times. Nevertheless, as a fan of early Manowar, I'm always happy to have more music in that style. I appreciate what Triumpher are doing and hope they continue to hone their songwriting skills on future releases. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
