It's been a while since I listened to Dark Tranquillity, so I was looking forward to this. Well, simply put, this is not my thing. You do have the expected melodic death metal, which is very strong on the melodic aspect except for a few harder passages here and there, and with the relatively decipherable growls that don't sound all that "death-y." The take on melodic death metal certainly has a modern vibe to it, a change from the early days of the genre. There are also some passages and songs that barely qualify as "metal," if at all; we're talking mellow, melancholic music with clean vocals. Not to say the material is bad when taken one song at a time, but for an album it doesn't really gel. Sometimes I thought some my playlist had moved on to the next album by some other band. Some people will totally dig and eat this up, but personally I'd rather stick to their early stuff.
