Astral Doors have been putting out albums for like 20 years now, and yet they have never really made anything anyone will call a classic. I think the last one of theirs I heard was Requiem of Time back in like 2010. Reviews of this band are always mixed, because some people really like them, and others really, really don't. I have never had much of an impression of this band, and on this one they continue their tradition of not having a very distinct sound. This album features former Wuthering Heights vocalist Nils Johansson, and his nasal bleating doesn't do this music any favors. If there's a complaint I have about this album besides the vocals, it's just that it's pretty bland. Astral Doors seem to be trying to sound like you put every other Swedish Heavy/Power Metal band in a blender and ground them all into a rather thin gruel. It's not bad really, it just doesn't have anything that's really good about it either. It makes perfectly fine background music, but it just doesn't have enough substance to get excited about.
