I last reviewed this Swedish band's Man with the Chains EP back in 2010. I hadn't heard anything from them for a long time before their third album, Warlords, showed up. They apparently took a break from releasing music after the EP and got back in the game with 2019's From Life to Death, a record I missed. I was not impressed with their earlier efforts but was curious to see what they'd done with their time in the intervening years. Warlords is still full of the band's early '80s-style heavy metal which borrows heavily from the NWOBHM and the concurrent European scene and their songwriting has definitely improved. They aren't going to blow anyone away but there are a couple of real corkers on Warlords, from the quick and catchy "Cry of the Night", the old-school ode to Japanese organized crime "Tyrants in Tokyo" and my favorite cut, the slow, rumbling horror movie-inspired "Mutant March." This one has the same gravitation pull of Anvil's "Forged in Fire" while the rest of the album evokes bands like Witch Cross, Crossfire, Blitzkrieg, etc. I'm glad to see Helvetets Port have kept at it and have continued to improve. Check out Warlords if some no frills "80s heavy metal is what you are in the mood for.
