Well, this is the good stuff right here if you are like me and grew up on early '80s speed metal. Mechanic Tyrants is a German band that plays fast and loud while not forgetting that metal can also be melodic and catchy. St. Diemen Riots is their debut, and you can tell these guys played Megadeth's Killing Is My Business..., Exciter's Violence and Force and Agent Steel's Skeptics Apocalypse a lot while learning their instruments. Megadeth is probably the main influence as can be heard in the lighting fast twin guitar leads on the title track and "Mechanic Tyrants" while "Speed Metal Guerilla" has a modern, Dragonforce style take on putting the pedal to the metal. They even bust out some nice vocal harmonies on "Ruins of the Past" and a Scorpions "Holiday"-esque introspective guitar instrumental ("Madrugada"). Sure, Mechanic Tyrants wear their influences proudly on their denim vests, but everything on St. Diemen Riots is done with such sincere adoration of those who've come before it is next to impossible not to just bang your head and enjoy what these guys are doing. A very promising debut from a band I will be watching very closely in the future. |
