When you get into USBM, you tend to get one of three things: Cascadian bands, super-generic bands, and then you get weird little projects like this one. Definitively Black Metal, Canis Dirus are coming at it from a more primitivist direction, harking back to bands like Beherit with their chaotic, malign atmosphere and off-the-wall songwriting. Other bands, like Krieg, are sometimes experimental like this, but then Krieg have never been this consistent, even on the same album. Despite the unusual songwriting choices, this does not veer off into non-metal territory and it never loses a consistent mood and emotional through-line. I kept listening because I was never sure where this was going to go next, but I knew it would be interesting. |
