This is the third album from Scotland's Midnight Force and a continuation of the sound of their prior efforts. The band plays traditional heavy metal with an epic vibe courtesy of the historical and fantasy-based lyrics. The gritty vocals and chugging guitars of their earlier albums are in place and, just like on Dunsinane and Gododdin, they are not bad but not great either. The vocals are good for this style, but the singer gives a limited performance, relying on a few signature moves, hitting them frequently. The riffs are standard for traditional metal and the guitar tone needs more bite. There aren't many hooks to speak of and little on Severan sticks around for long after the album ends. I want this band to get better as they are on the right track, but each release so far shows them treading water and releasing similar sounding and underwhelming albums. There's appeal for fans of epic music like early Virgin Steele, Manowar, etc. but Midnight Force need to step up their songwriting and find a producer that can unleash their performances more.
