Once again Vic Records is unearthing a hidden gem. Speedica was a short-lived Dutch speed/thrash band from the mid-80s to the early 1990s (now active again) and this compilation contains remastered versions of their two demos as well as a few live tracks. Speed/thrash is the right categorization for this band; they thrash hard, but are also quite melodic, kind of bringing the best of both worlds to their songs. No surprises here: this is '80s metal through and through, just the real deal as opposed to a band doing the revival thing. For demo tracks, this stuff actually sounds really good and if I didn't know, I'd have just assumed it was one of those rawer recordings that weren't (and still aren't) all that uncommon. I can't say it's especially catchy stuff, though; when it's over, I can't think of a song that really stuck around in my head. Still, it's fun while it's on, with all the expected crunchy guitars, swirling solos, powerful drumming and high-pitched clean vocals. If you can't get enough '80s metal and are always looking for obscure bands, Shadows of Tomorrow sure is worth your while. |
