This is the debut from Beast, with a blast of solid Heavy/Power Metal that is definitely a good start. This thing is packed with guitar crunch and some good, chugging riffage. I'm reminded of Dragonheart from the Vengeance in Black days, as well as Lonewolf, Stormwarrior, or even Battlerage. The songwriting overall is not super original, but it kicks ass. If there's a weakness here, it's in the vocal department, and it's not because Philipp Rethmann is a bad singer. At worst he's just okay, not bad, but Stormwarrior get away with it. The problem is that the vocal lines are often just not very good. These songs have a lot of energy, and they especially need choruses that kick ass, and these often fall short of that. The vocal melodies are often just adequate, and it has to be said they sound worse against the backdrop of really strong riffs and leads. This is a strong debut, but they need better vocal melodies, and maybe a better singer, to really hit the next level. |
