Review

I last reviewed an Empires of Eden album way back in 2010 (Reborn in Fire) and found it well-executed technically, but saddled with drab songwriting. Fast-forward to 2024 where main man Stu Marshall has released the band's fifth album, Guardians of Time and from the first note, it is an obvious step up from Reborn in Fire. Empires of Eden play melodic heavy/power metal and Guardians of Time has a very good production and the crunchy guitars, soaring vocals (courtesy of several guests like Rob Rock, Dragony's Jonas Heidgert and Sean Peck from Rage) and smooth melodies are given plenty of room to shine. There is a mix of faster, double-kick numbers and mid-paced tracks, all of which display much better songwriting with the lead single, "Baptise this Hell," being truly infectious. Empires of Eden's style reminds me mainly of fellow Australians Black Majesty and, with Guardians of Time, are putting themselves in the same arena as their countrymen.
