Based on the band's name, I was expecting some no-holds-barred brutal death metal, but that's not quite it. This is more like razor-sharp death metal that's quite varied in delivery, from slow to fast-paced, and the slower songs are absolutely crushing. The faster songs are fun, especially in the guitar department, where there's an obvious '80s influence from straightforward heavy metal to thrash metal. In fact, more than once I couldn't help but think of mid-80s Metallica, especially Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, with heavy and crunchy, catchy riffs that take centre stage. It's a very diverse album that often takes the listener off-guard by going in unexpected directions, all while remaining coherent. Closer "Rivers of Grief" especially stands out, starting out kind of ambient before pinning you to the ground like a little bitch with some heavy riffage and drums while still maintaining a melodic aspect. If varied, old-school death metal with some heavy and thrash elements speaks to you, then you need to check this one out. |
