Aries Descendant is a new collaboration between Catalyst Crime/Prydian/Pyramaze keyboardist Jonah Weingarten and singer/guitarist Nicklas Sonne who is in several Danish bands I'm not familiar with, and none of which has released much recently. On their debut, From the Ashes of Deceit, Weingarten and Sonne have recorded some excellent symphonic metal where they've worked hard to make sure the keyboards and guitars are perfectly balanced and provide a lush landscape of melodies to support Sonne's strong vocals. The songwriting is top-notch and, while the limits of symphonic metal are not being pushed very much, that won't get in the way of enjoying the abundant hooks that make songs like "Oblivion" and "Renewal of Hope" instant earworms. From the Ashes of Deceit is an album fans of bands like Masterplan and Avantasia should immediately check out. |
