Fuck yes. I really liked Horoh's debut, Aberration, and the question is always whether the band can live to expectations after a strong debut. The answer here is yes. This was a one-man band but is now a duo with a dedicated vocalist, and with the original member handling the instruments. Horde of Horror is a good name for this album, as there are a few intros and outros (short, don't worry) that sound like they're straight out of some gory horror movie. I don't know how many listens I'm at as I write this, but these still catch me off guard and some of them creep me out every time. The new vocalist delivers some top-notch, abrasive growls that can clean up that ear wax; I don't usually use "razor-sharp" to describe growls, but that's kind of how he comes off sounding most of the time, and it's one hell of a match for the music, especially the guitars (which are less weird to call razor-sharp, which they are). A lot of this is pretty slow; not actually going into doom territory, more like a good pace for the horror thematic, making you feel like you're listening to a never-ending nightmare (in a good way). It's brutal at times, but above all very diverse, not sounding like one of those walls of sounds and each song has its own individuality, with the heaviness and nightmarish horror being the glue that ties them all together. If the artwork doesn't send the uninitiated crying to their mommy, the music will. The bad news for Horoh is that this album will be hard to top. |
