Estonia isn't generally a country we think about when it comes to killer metal, but Deceitome just might have the chops to change that if they keep going like this. I really enjoyed their previous two releases, both of which proved that just because the HM2 sound has been done (ahem) to death doesn't mean it's not worth doing when done right, and their self-titled sophomore effort is just more proof of that fact. The easiest way to describe this album is to take Entombed's first two releases and have Craig McPillard and John McEntee spew their guttural growls all over it. That makes this sound derivative and one-dimensional, but while it may be the former, there's actually a surprising amount of nuance and shading going in the songwriting that puts this well above the countless other acts that just rip off Like An Everflowing Stream and call it a day. I'd say more, but this has always been a band about sticking to a tried-and-true formula while adding enough to it to truly call it their own, and this release is no exception. If you can't get enough of the Swedish sound, then you'll be in good company with Deceitome. See below for more reviews and interviews... ↓ |
