Canada's Trollwar play melodic death metal with folk influences and Tales from the Frozen Wastes is their 2024 EP, the first new material from the band since 2018's Oath of the Storm album. This is my first exposure to them, so I can't speak to what has come before but, on this release, there is a lot of melodic riffing and harsh vocals backed up by supporting keys creating big, majestic songs. I'm not an expert on melodic death metal by any means, but it sure sounds a lot like what I have heard before from bands playing this space. All four songs sound great and I'm sure I'd bang my head if I was at a Trollwar show but I don't hear much difference between the four, other than the closer, "The Offering," which features some clean singing and a middle section with some different tempos. Nothing on Tales from the Frozen Wastes blew me away as a casual fan, but I also didn't dislike anything I heard, so if you love melodic death metal, I'm sure you'll find something to like here.
