I got excited thinking this was a new Behexen album, considering we haven't had a peep from them in almost a decade. Alas, no, this is instead a beefy compilation of their old demo tracks, dating all the way back to their pre-Behexen days as Lords of the Left Hand back in the '90s. Clocking in at over 90 minutes, with 20 tracks, this is a lot of material for fans. As you might expect, the recording and songwriting on these tracks is far more primitive than the tight, aggressive Black Metal this band normally trades in, but in this kind of music, a really underground sound only adds to the charm. This has that same Behexen feel for melody, only with a recording job more suited to second-wave stuff like classic Satyricon or Horna. If you like Behexen, well, this is what you get for now, but it's really for fans of more old-school, raw Black Metal. |
