Feel the Steel is the seventh full-length album from multi-instrumentalist Jo Steel's Ice War and is full of his lo-fi, traditional heavy metal. I like some of the riffs such as on "Memories" as well as the creepy, '70s synths on "Lost to the Void," which give this song an early Manilla Road vibe. However, I continue to find Steel's vocals, which I would charitably say are "rough and unpolished," hard to sit through and the guitars on Feel the Steel are mixed low and lacking in punch, both doing their best to make the album a chore. I typically enjoy this kind of NWOBHM-inspired, DIY heavy metal and I can appreciate what Steel is going for but, as on most of Ice War's releases, the execution lets the final product down. Some will undoubtedly find Feel the Steel's idiosyncrasies to their liking but that doesn't change the flaws that are hard to ignore.
