Well, this was a nice surprise. Hazzerd are a Canadian thrash metal band that I've never heard of before, wearing their old-school influences proudly on their sleeve, playing a very melodic style mainly reminiscent of Megadeth but with hints of other well-known bands such as Slayer and Exodus. The 3rd Dimension is not particularly original, but well enough executed for this to satisfy any thrash craving. The guitar work is particularly good, with riffing that is very efficient, alternating between faster passages and heavier, mid-paced chugging, dual guitar harmonies and technical, sometimes neoclassical but face-melting leads. I strongly suspect that someone here digs Marty Friedman's work with early Megadeth, considering the striking resemblance between the "Tornado of Souls" guitar solo by Friedman and the one found on Hazzerd's "Unto Ashes." Also, Rust in Peace's footprint is all over the somewhat silly (and moronically titled) "ThRaSh TiLl DeTh," again highlighting that particular influence. The vocals are another strong point and are delivered as a kind of twisted, throaty sneer that Dylan Westendorp (who also handles the drum kit) executes powerfully and aggressively, containing just the right amount of attitude. All in all, while not providing anything out of the ordinary, The 3rd Dimension is a homage to classic thrash metal that is well worth the listen. |
