Mistur play black metal in the vein of fellow Western Norwegian countrymen Windir, Galar and Enslaved, with a sharp Viking edge and folk elements. In Memoriam was released seven years after Attende, and Mistur used this time wisely to hone their songwriting skills. The result is a very consistent effort full of blazing riffs, blackened, sorrowful melodies, moody Emperor/Windir-esque keys and an evocative vocal performance, alternating between clean, desperate wails and harsh rasps, expertly aligning with the shifting nature of the music itself. The guitar work is excellent, with tasty leads woven into the fiery riffing that reminds me of what Ice Dale brings to Enslaved. The similarities with Enslaved do not stop there. The main riff on album highlight "The Sight" sounds very similar to Enslaved's "Ethica Odini," and the recognizable Hammond organ sound in the background here and there, as well as the prominent use of clean vocals, reinforces that comparison. This is not to take anything away from Mistur, though, because In Memoriam is a very well-done, blistering, black metal album, bringing together all the good things of the more melodic side of Norwegian black metal.
