Right away, seeing the band's name and the artwork, I figured this would be some gory, heavy, putrid death metal, and that's pretty much what Corpus Offal have to offer on their self-titled debut album. The band was formed by a couple of guys from the now-defunct Cerebral Rot and a couple of other bands. The carnage continues.

Like a lot of albums in the genre, this goes anywhere from speedy, even a little technical, death metal, all the way down to slow, crushing, nightmarish and d-a-r-k. The deep growls work no matter where the music is at, a devilish style that's always effective. "Metallically speaking," this is not all that different from a lot of death metal out there, though it's very well executed. What I find sets Corpus Offal apart is the very effective atmosphere that can be felt practically everywhere on the album, giving the music a much darker, nightmarish and horror-like feel. Let's hope there's more of this coming down the pipeline.
