Nightsteel is a new band from Greece that is putting out their self-titled debut via Cosmic Fire Records. Nightsteel is sort of a "tale of two bands" in that Crimson Glory singer Travis Wills, who is listed as the band's singer, takes the lead on the first four songs but hands the microphone off to people like Rob Lundgren (Reveal, ex-Powerdrive), Craig Cairns (Tailgunner) and newcomer Mauro Elias for the others. The songs that Wills handles are '80s heavy/power metal anthems, led by "Darkness Reigns," which has the high, catchy chorus and brisk pacing of Riot, but when the album hits the midpoint, and "Whispers of the Heart", the songwriting shifts to a more commercially-oriented style. The accessible songwriting and neo-classical guitars on this one remind me of Yngwie Malmsteen's late '80s efforts and we move further from heavy/power toward heavy/hard rock with "Pangioti" and "Win or Lose" which sound a lot like late '80s Krokus. The second half of Nightsteel isn't terrible, it is just a noticeable shift in style (and drop in quality) from the first half, which started things off so promising. It is a mixed bag for the power/heavy/hard rock fan to rummage through for anything that might take their fancy. |
