Tyran's Oath is the debut album from Germany's Tyran, which was originally released in 2024 and is getting a CD reissue with a couple of live bonus tracks courtesy of Listenable Records. I'm stoked because I was unaware of this album and Tyran plays the kind of direct, ass-kicking heavy metal I love, and would have missed out on it. The guitar sound is melodic and crunchy in equal measure, supporting the high, soaring vocals that are easy to sing along with. It's full of solid songs from start to finish but gets better as it progresses, starting with the Lizzy Borden-like vocal lines on "Thrill of the Chase" and the speedy heavy/power metal of "Highway Warriors," which reminds me of early Scanner. These are my favorites, but since none of the songs are bad, you'll have a lot to choose from. The live versions of "Heavy Metal Outlaws" and "Strike of the Whip" are OK but not mandatory if you can't find a version of Tyran's Oath with them. Fans of the '80s bands I mentioned and newer traditional metal acts like Sin Starlett and Löanshark should grab a copy and get ready to start throwing fists in the air.
