This is a one-man band (that the lone member named after himself) and it is one of those that is insanely productive, with 22 full-length releases in the last 12 years. Past albums list lyrics, but this album is entirely instrumental, comprised of 4 enormous tracks all over 15 minutes long. This is extremely slow and drawn-out music, with the entire opening track being entirely acoustic/atmospheric, and you don't get any real riffs until well into the second song. Keys remain the dominant instrument throughout, and the whole seeks to build a highly orchestral sound. This is soothing and makes for good background music, but it largely doesn't have the presence for more than that. The compositions dawdle a lot, and so you can't be sitting there listening, waiting for something to happen, because not much does in the conventional sense. A lot of this sounds like an intro for a song that never really starts, and so despite some melodic pleasures, this remains rather unsatisfying. |
