Risen Crow is a new power metal band that I guessed was Italian about 10 minutes into their debut album, Requiem for a Damned Love. While that implies at least some lack of originality, which is fair, it also means some well-produced, well-played, exciting power metal. Risen Crow isn't nearly as neo-classical as some of their countrymen, adding a larger dash of crunchy, northern European power metal to their mix, but the combination of male and female vocals does a lot to enhance the fantasy storytelling atmosphere many Italian bands employ. All the songs on Requiem for a Damned Love are hooky and entertaining, though most fall short of truly memorable, but it is still a fun listen even in the absence of a standout track. If you are a power metal fan, grab a copy and settle in for a fun ride in between Kaledon and Ancient Bards with a streak of Helloween. |
