It warms my heart when I look at the band photo of Sweden's Bloodstain on Metal Archives and see a bunch of young musicians wearing Motörhead, Bathory and Judas Priest shirts, knowing I'm in for some '80s style heavy metal. On their debut EP, I Am Death, Bloodstain play melodic, thrashy heavy metal that is pure fun in a way I haven't really heard since Wolf's The Black Flame (the fact that the vocals have the same sneering quality facilitates that comparison). There is plenty of speed, but it isn't buzz saw guitars or triggered drums, just musicians playing fast because it sounds so damn cool. The lead work has the kind of back-and-forth volleying that made so many Priest and Helloween songs memorable, and the songwriting is excellent for a first effort with tracks like "Still Alive," "Bloodstains" and "I Am Death" sticking around after they've ended. At 21+ minutes, I Am Death ends way before I want it to, and I am already anticipating new music from this band. If you like speedy, melodic, '80s-influenced heavy metal at all, get on the Bloodstain bandwagon now. |
