Djevel's ode to the night in three acts ended with this, Natt Til Ende, which was released late last year, just a few months before main songwriter Trånn Ciekals sadly passed away. On this record, Djevel is majestic in their blasphemy, and deliver cold and harsh second-wave black metal dripping with spite. The expansive production lends a dramatic and icily epic quality to the music, which is further heightened by choral arrangements and Kvitrim's disdainful, commanding rasps. Together, these elements successfully evoke a sense of unease. Natt til Ende is stylistically diverse, consisting of songs with fast, menacing and frosty riffs, as heard on opener "Bespottelsen" and "Ravnehymnen" to slower, more atmospheric cuts like "En Vinter Efter Kommer" and "Jesu Lidelse," which are no less scathing. The guitars dominate the soundscape together with Kvitrim's vocals and together they conjure a sense of discomfort that is hammered into place by Faust's impeccable drumming. To me, this band sounds a lot like Whoredom Rife and Taake, but draped in a mysticism and something I can only describe as a certain arrogance that many similar bands do not match. The latter characteristic can be off-putting at times, making Natt Til Ende require a certain sinister state of mind to be fully appreciated, though on the whole, its quality is undeniable. |
