Game of Faces is the ninth album from Sweden's Dynazty, a band I've never reviewed before. That's a bit shocking since they play "happy," melodic power metal, one of my favorite genres. The album is loaded with catchy choruses, hooky riffs, soaring melodies, etc., none of which are breaking any ground but the songwriting and playing elevate the album above the other rank-and-file releases. There are marching beats and chanted choruses ("Die to Survive," "Mystery"), double-kick workouts ("Call of the Night," "Phoenix") and a ballad that is actually kind of listenable ("Dream of Spring"). There are electronic/dance influences, a "thing" in today's power metal, but nowhere near as intrusive as a band like Beast in Black. Game of Faces contains plenty of straight-up power metal and it reminds me especially of Dynazty's countrymen Sabaton. If you don't like power metal, you can skip Game of Faces, but if you do, especially the smooth, melodic stripe, you should find yourself breaking out the air guitar or air keytar in no time.
